Targeting Effective and Ethical Leadership
Critical issues in law enforcement and public safety
- Communication Issues in Law Enforcement
- As I reflect back on my work throughout my MS in Leadership in Law Enforcement and Public Safety, the three courses that I believe promoted ethical and effective leadership was:
- 1. LEPS 510-Communicating with the public,
- 2. LEPS 510-Communications for Law Enforcement Leaders and
- 3.The Role of Intra-Agency Mentorship in Helping Train New Law Enforcement Personnel.
Communicating with the Public
In this module Professor Patrick stressed why it was so important for law enforcement agencies to be transparent with the public. We discussed why it was unethical for the police department to mislead the public in the case of Freddie Gray case in Baltimore, where the leadership issued false information in the initial findings which caused the public to form a negative image of law enforcement which caused days of unrest in the city. It showed the importance of communication not only with law enforcement but with the public as well.
Communications for Law Enforcement Leaders
In this module Professor Patrick stressed the importance of law enforcement leaders collaborating with other law enforcement agencies as well as the public so that law enforcement could better fight crime in the neighborhoods and help solve crimes. Some of the organizations that we discussed were: 1. Neighborhood watch, 2. Crime stoppers, 3. utilizing other agencies such as the F.B.I., State and Local agencies as well as the District Attorney’s office to help in combating crime.
The Role of Intra-Agency Mentorship in Helping Train New Law Enforcement Personnel
In this module we learned the importance of leadership in law enforcement through the use of mentoring. We discussed the role of Intra-Agency Mentorship and why it is so important when training a new recruit. We discussed the benefits and the challenges of this leadership role inside police departments. In this module we put together a power point presentation and discussed both the benefits and the challenges of mentorship.

Organizational Leadership
My three exemplary work that I have chosen for the capstone has given me a better understanding on how law enforcement agency work collaboratively with each other, plus the subjects have increased my knowledge and education in my field of law enforcement.
My first exemplary work that I have chosen comes from “Community Assessment: Organization.” This course introduces the various methods to conduct scientific research in society and to evaluate organizations, with an emphasis on action-oriented research. The work that I provided for the capstone was a group project covering the gang problem in America. The research we conducted for this project focused on the type of street gangs and outlaw motorcycle gangs that law enforcement facing each day. We also discovered different methods used by law enforcement throughout the United States to suppress these gangs, as well as methods used to prevent others from joining.
My second exemplary work that I have chosen comes from “Community Assessment: Crime and Criminal Justice.” This course gave me a depth-oriented understanding of crime data, crime trends, and the crime problem, which is essential for law enforcement leaders. This course analyzed the four major sources of crime data used in the United States, in which I applied in my research paper for the capstone. The research paper that is posted in my portfolio will cover the self-report survey, National Incident Based Reporting System (NIBRS), and The National Crime Victimization Survey. The research paper will show how each system was used in my research from a high crime area within the United States.
The third exemplary work that I have chosen comes from “Organizational Leadership” course. This course taught me how to examine leadership through various theoretical lenses and framework. Each approach highlights attitudes and dispositions that have varying degrees of utility depending on the context of a given situation. By looking at the various approaches to leadership, I was able to develop a more sophisticated understanding of the phenomenon, and thereby, increase my ability to influence others. The research that I presented for my capstone will cover the different models that law enforcement leaders use to becoming a greater leader, such as; The Contingency Model and Robert Houses “Path Goal Theory” to leadership.
Engaging in Law Enforcement and Public Safety:
Institutional Assessment and Change
Engaging in Law Enforcement and Public Safety:
Institutional Assessment and Change
For this module I have chosen three assignments that reflect on my work throughout my MS Law Enforcement and Public Safety Leadership course. The courses that I have chosen have greatly increased my knowledge in a leadership role in the law enforcement field as well as given me the skills to implement them with confidence:
In LEPS 510, “Communication for Law Enforcement Leadership,” in this course it outlined the proper way to write policy and procedures for our department dealing with intra-agency and inter-agency communication. The assignment laid out the procedures in communicating via Mobile Data Terminal (MDT), proper use of social media to get out important information to the public, and proper procedures when communicating inter-office. By addressing the proper use in inter-agency and intra-agency communication in the written policy and procedure it gives the officers a solid foundation when communicating with other officers as well as the public. The essay that will be presented will discuss in detail the policies and procedures.
Also, in LEPS 510 “Communication for Law Enforcement Leadership,” this course also taught us the different types of techniques and styles to use when dealing with the public as well as other co-workers, including supervisor. It taught us when to use techniques or styles such as: transparency, respect, proactive, and relational. By following these laid out techniques it will allow for better communication between the police and the general public as well as better communications among co-workers.
Lastly, LEPS 570-“Multi-Agency Gang Task Force.” This course required our class to work as a team, team of four on a proposal to put together a multi-task force to deal with the growing concern of gangs in our society. It required daily contact by the students to cover items such as: prevention methods, intervention methods, and suppression methods. The objective of the task force was to utilize all necessary resources available such as: local, state, and federal law enforcement agency, to work collaboratively on assembling a task force to rid the problem of gangs in the neighborhoods. In my final paper it will show you the strategies that we used and how effective each one was. Refer to URL: www.lawenforcementleadership.weebly.com
Modern criminology and criminal justice issues
Capstone-599-Module 5- Modern Criminology and Criminal Justice Issues:
Reflection and Exemplary Work
For this module, I have chosen three assignments that will show my exemplary work for my capstone project throughout my MS Law Enforcement and Public Safety Leadership course. The courses that I have chosen have greatly increased my knowledge in a leadership role in law enforcement as well as given me the skills to implement them with confidence.
My first exemplary work comes from “Critical Issues in Law Enforcement and Public Safety,” where it evaluated numerous critical issues faced by law enforcement leaders in the contemporary United States, from street gangs to recidivism rates, as well as effective public policy. The exemplary work that will be presented will highlight: Drug use and Policy, correction and recidivism rates from drug policies, and ethics and technology used by law enforcement in combating the effects of drug use in America.
My second exemplary work also comes from “Critical Issues in Law Enforcement and Public Safety.” In my second exemplary work, I will have on display a power-point presentation that has a theme of, effective public policy enacted by two Presidents of the United States, from the “War on Drug Policy” to “Just Say No” policy. The power-point presentation will compare both public policies and their ramifications for violating them.
My third and final exemplary work will come from “Public Safety Law,” where we were introduced and analyzed a series of laws and legal issues central to leadership in law enforcement and public safety, with the theme being “Body Worn Cameras” (BWC). The paper that was presented was in a memorandum form that touched on legal issues of when and where a BWC can be used while an officer is on-duty. It also covers policy issues such as, when the cameras can be used in testimony in court and writing official reports.
